FARMS programs in India

FARMS India is an indigenous mission devoted to strengthening the local church in places of great need. They write "FARMS India gives loans for projects of agriculture and animal husbandry endeavors with new dimensions of entrepreneurship to both churches and denominations. The individual entrepreneurs are an outstanding example of self-dependence and dignity of labor. This, no doubt has helped a long way in the growth of the local churches, especially in rural areas.

Udhaya Kumar was physically handicapped from birth and had very limited use of his legs. Kumar accepted the Lord Jesus Christ while living Madras. Physically unfit for other types of work, he chose welding as a profession, and worked for hire. FARMS India helped him with a small loan of $50.00. With this he rented his own shop and now runs his own welding business. His increased income now supports his family and provides for the education of his two children. Kumar is involved in church ministry and is very thankful for the help provided.

Although Mr. S. Chelladurai was a Christian and attended the Evangelical church of India, his lack of education prevented him from having a steady income. His desperate situation was reported to FARMS India in 1992. A loan of $125.00 enabled him to begin selling fabric by the piece, (enough to make a shirt, a skirt, etc.) in the night market. Mr. Chelladurai, now fifty-nine, continues on in this business and is able to support his family of three children. His loan is completely repaid and an extra installment was given with gratitude to FARMS India. He is a strong and faithful witness in his church.

Mrs. Navaneethammal is a resident of Ambatur, a village in the outskirts of Madras. She was a widow with great needs and in much misery. She came in contact with FARMS India and they helped her with a small loan of $25.00 to start a vegetable vending business. She began by marketing door to door, but when her regular customers increased, she was able to set up permanently in the market. She now sells fish, which is much more profitable. With her income, she supports her daughter and two grandchildren. Gone are the days of misery and hunger.
