FARMS International works in Ecuador alongside Hinterland Ministries of Mission to the World. Hinterland is a development mission working among the Quichua people throughout Ecuador and Peru. The location of the FARMS Ecuador projects are in the Riobamba area of Chimborazo Province.
These projects are mostly agricultural with some home cottage industries. The potential for this program is great. The Quichua are very poor and there is a history of not supporting pastors. FARMS International hopes to see this turned around. FARMS is also looking forward to the establishment of several greenhouse projects, funded by a mission offering from the Urbana 2000 Conference. These projects will employ other workers besides the project holders. Growing marketable crops like tomatoes during the off season has great economic potential.
In September, 2002 FARMS and Hinterland lost a dear friend associated with the FARMS Ecuador program when Rev. Don Williams tragically died. Since that time this FARMS program has continued on and Hinterland Ministries is identifying a replacement for Don Williams to facilitate the program. A training and assessment visit to Ecuador will be made by FARMS later this year.
